Pre & Post Care Instructions
PRE-CARE INSTRUCTIONS
2 Weeks Before Treatment
- Prescription Skincare: Stop all prescription retinoids (Vitamin A), hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, and high-strength or prescription products.
- Aesthetic/Medical Treatments: Avoid facials, skin needling, laser treatments, laser hair removal (face or treatment area), and all cosmetic injectables.
- Illness & Medications: Allow at least 2 weeks after recovery from illness to ensure the immune system is fully supported or completing a course of antibiotics or steroids (topical or systemic), as these can suppress immunity, slow healing, sensitise the skin, increase photosensitivity, and raise the risk of irritation or pigmentation.
1 Week Before Treatment
- Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, threading, dermaplaning, electrolysis, or brow lamination on the treatment area as they can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier and cause micro-irritation.
- Sun & Heat Exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure (sun-burn), wind exposure (wind-burn), tanning beds etc. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing.
3-5 Days Before Treatment
- Skincare & Actives: Stop all active and exfoliating products (acids, vitamin C, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, scrubs, peels, masks, and exfoliating pads). If you use any weekly exfoliation products, stop at least 7 days before your appointment to avoid over-exfoliation and barrier damage. If unsure, contact your therapist and list your current skincare—only gentle, hydrating products should be used during this time.
48 Hours Before Treatment
- Sun & Heat: Continue to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. Refrain from saunas, steam rooms, infrared saunas, hot baths, swimming pools, jacuzzis, or intense exercise. We want to keep the skin as cool and calm as possible. Avoiding unnecessary heat, inflammation, and swelling before your appointment helps reduce pigmentation risks and stress on the skin during treatment.
Day of Treatment
- Reminders: Do not exercise or do any heat-inducing activities, ensure no active cold sores are present - otherwise we will need reschedule, and inform your therapist of any changes or concerns.
What to Expect After the Treatment
- Skin appears immediately brighter, smoother, and more hydrated
- Mild redness, warmth, flushing, or sensitivity may occur and usually settles within hours to 1–2 days
- Temporary tightness, dryness, tingling, light flaking, or mild peeling from exfoliation may be experienced
- Mild puffiness, swelling, or small red marks—especially after extractions—may occur and resolve quickly
- Temporary breakouts or purging may occur as congestion clears due to increased cell turnover
- Increased sensitivity to heat, sun exposure, steam, and active skincare
- No significant downtime is expected; normal activities can usually be resumed immediately
Step by Step Aftercare - Days 1 to 5
- Continue cleansing and hydrating your skin using the gentle non-active routine you were using prior to treatment. Pat dry, do not rub. You may resume your actives 3-5 days after the facial, depending on your skin sensitivity and recovery.
- Apply and reapply SPF 50+ daily and as needed.
- An aftercare card with detailed, step-by-step instructions for this time frame will be provided to you after your treatment.
- Avoid direct sun exposure; use protective clothing and hats where possible.
- Do not touch, pick, scratch, rub the skin or cause friction to prevent bacteria spreading, scabbing, scarring, hyperpigmentation and irritation.
- Make sure to change your pillowcase, wipe down your phone, and keep your environment clean to reduce the risk of bacteria and support proper healing.
- Continue to avoid the heat inducing exercises/activities listed earlier, sweating and heat exposure even from cooking, opening hot ovens and extremely hot showers etc. Gentle and low intensity activities such as walking or pilates is usually fine 48 hours after.
- Generally, makeup can be applied after a facial, provided there are no open pimples, active breakouts, or areas of irritation. It’s best to avoid makeup on same day of treatment to allow your skin to breathe and absorb the benefits fully. Mineral makeup is always preferred.
- If a combination treatment was performed, expect additional days of downtime and healing.
- If uncomfortable puffiness, swelling and itchiness occurs, antihistamines may be taken as recommended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
POST-CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- Prolonged Sun Care: Continue to protect your skin with broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily, even after the healing period. Avoid tanning beds and minimize sun exposure for several weeks to maintain results and prevent pigmentation issues.
- Skincare & Actives Restriction: Avoid all active and exfoliating products (acids, vitamin C, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, scrubs, peels, masks, and exfoliating pads). for at least 3-5 days after treatment or until fully healed. Resume weekly exfoliation products after 7 days from treatment. Avoid ANY prescription skincare, retinoids (Vitamin A products), hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, or any other high-strength topical products for 2 weeks post-treatment or until fully healed.
- Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, threading, dermaplaning, electrolysis or brow lamination on the treatment area for at least 1 week after treatment or until fully healed.
- Aesthetic & Medical Treatments: Avoid facials, skin needling, laser treatments, laser hair removal (face or treated area), chemical peels, and cosmetic injectables (Botox, dermal fillers, skin boosters) for 2–4 weeks post-treatment or until fully healed, depending on the procedure.

- Other Medications/Supplements: ANY and ALL medications, supplements, vitamins, and herbal/naturopathic products — including anti-fungals, anti-histamines and common supplements such as fish oil, flaxseed, high-dose vitamin E, and St John’s Wort — must be disclosed to your therapist, whether taken daily, occasionally, or recently. Some medications or supplements may increase photosensitivity, the risk of burning, have blood thinning effects or affect healing, so your therapist will assess suitability and advise if anything requires a 2-week pause. A test patch is required.
5–7 Days Before Treatment
- Skincare & Actives: Stop all active and exfoliating products (acids, vitamin C, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, scrubs, peels, masks, and exfoliating pads). If you use any weekly exfoliation products, stop at least 7 days before your appointment to avoid over-exfoliation and barrier damage. If unsure, contact your therapist and list your current skincare—only gentle, hydrating products should be used during this time.
- Water Intake: Increasing water intake hydrates the skin cells, supports optimal healing and enhances laser absorption into the skin.
48 Hours Before Treatment
- Sun & Heat: Continue to avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. Refrain from saunas, steam rooms, infrared saunas, hot baths, swimming pools, jacuzzis, or intense exercise. We want to keep the skin as cool as possible. By minimising additional inflammation, swelling, and heat on the day of your appointment, we help prevent unwanted pigmentation and avoid overloading the skin with heat or energy.
- IV Drips / Iron Infusions: Wait at least 48 hours post-infusion to ensure your body has stabilised and there are no local or systemic reactions.
- NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Advil): These should be avoided within this time frame where possible unless otherwise advised by your doctor, and your therapist should be informed beforehand, as they can interfere with the controlled inflammatory healing cascade.
- Cold Sores (Herpes Simplex Virus): If you are prone to cold sores, antiviral medication may be taken as recommended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider (some protocols begin 3 days prior).
Day of Treatment
- Reminders: Do not exercise or do any heat-inducing activities, ensure no active cold sores are present - otherwise we will need reschedule, and inform your therapist of any changes or concerns. If you have recently taken a one-off medication, also inform your therapist before starting the session.
What to Expect After the Treatment
- Mild warmth, heat, tingling, stinging and sensitivity, like a light sunburn for a few hours to a few days post.
- Slight redness, flushed feeling for a few hours to a few days post.
- Very mild swelling which settles quickly
- Tightness or dryness from a few hours post to a few days post.
- No peeling or extreme skin disruption.
- Redness and bumps at the treatment site which can last up to several days post.
Laser Specific Expectations:
- Slight gridding patterns or micro-crusting can be visible and typically settle within a few days (ClearSkin).
- Frosting may occur, but it typically settles within 10-15 minutes (ClearLift Melasma Protocol).
- In acne-prone clients, the thermal stimulation may occasionally “wake up” dormant sebaceous activity, causing minor purging and underlying breakouts or clogged pores to the surface, which typically settle within a few days after (ClearSkin and IPL).
- You may notice tiny white or translucent dots on the skin a few days after. These are harmless micro-bubbles caused by the laser’s heating of water in the skin and usually disappear within a few hours to a day. They are a normal, temporary response and indicate the laser is working effectively to stimulate collagen and clear debris (ClearSkin).
- Occasional petechiae (tiny pinpoint red spots) due to micro-circulation stimulation, which are harmless and fade within a few days (ClearLift and IPL).
Expected changes to the skin over the next 1 – 7 days for vascular treatments (IPL) include:
- Day 1 to 2 – Moderate redness, swelling, heat, and sensitivity. Vascular lesions may darken or go a purple/grey colour initially.
- Day 2 to 7 – Treated vessels may become more noticeable/bruised. Treated vessels may start to fade though this can take up to 2 weeks.
Expected changes to the skin over the next 1 – 7 days for pigmentation (ClearLift and IPL) include:
- Day 1 to 2 – Moderate redness, swelling, heat, and sensitivity. Areas of micro crusting (darkening of pigmented area) will develop over the first 24 hours
- Day 2 to 5 – As the skin naturally exfoliates the micro crusting will fall slough off. The darkened pigment will gradually shed from the skin or slowly fade and be reabsorbed by the body. Depending on your skin’s health, this can take up to 2 weeks.
Step by Step Aftercare - Days 1 to 5
- Gently cleanse your skin with a mild, non-active cleanser morning and evening. Pat dry, do not rub.
- Apply the aftercare gel provided by your therapist as directed, morning and evening.
- Apply a moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect and support the skin.
- A cool towel compress can be applied to the treated area at home to help reduce heat, redness, and sensitivity in the first 24-48 hours. Repeat several times as needed, using a fresh cool towel each time to maintain a soothing effect.
- Refrigerated Aloe Vera Gel may also be used to alleviate any discomfort where needed.
- Continue to avoid the heat inducing exercises/activities listed earlier, sweating and heat exposure even from cooking, opening hot ovens and extremely hot showers etc. Gentle and low intensity activities such as walking or pilates is usually fine 48 hours after.
- Makeup may be applied once the skin has healed sufficiently, provided there is no significant redness, blistering, or scabbing. Mineral makeup is always preferred.
- If a combination treatment was performed and or if the energy was increased during subsequent sessions, expect additional days of downtime and healing.
- If uncomfortable puffiness, swelling and itchiness occurs, antihistamines may be taken as recommended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
POST-CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the healing period. Hydration supports skin repair, reduces dryness and inflammation, and helps your skin remain supple for faster recovery.
- Prolonged Sun Care: Continue to protect your skin with broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily, even after the healing period. Avoid tanning beds and minimize sun exposure for several weeks to maintain results and prevent pigmentation issues.
- Skincare & Actives Restriction: Avoid all active and exfoliating products (acids, vitamin C, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, scrubs, peels, masks, and exfoliating pads). for at least 5-7 days after treatment or until fully healed. - Medications & Supplements: Other than essential prescription medications that cannot be paused, continue to avoid the same NSAIDs, supplements, vitamins, medications and herbal remedies (e.g., fish oil, flaxseed, high-dose vitamin E, St John’s Wort) immediately after treatment. They can be resumed 48–72 hours later if there is no bruising, delayed healing, or sensitivity, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Remember, everyone's skin reacts differently to treatment, and the healing process can vary based on individual skin types and characteristics.

Day 1 (Morning & Evening)
- Gently wash your face with Johnson’s Baby Soap (highly recommended as it will not rehydrate the skin and contains no hydrating actives). The aim is to avoid hydrating the skin throughout the recovery process as this will interfere with the peeling process and alter the results.
- Thermal water spray can be used at any time to alleviate itchiness or discomfort. Highly recommended is the Avene Thermal Spray.
- Apply a light mineral compact powder with SPF ≥ 15 every morning, such as the Nude by Nature Mineral Compact (highly recommended) and reapply as needed to maintain sun protection.
- Makeup that is in powder form may be applied, any cream based products are highly advised against for their potential to rehydrate the skin.
- An aftercare card with detailed, step-by-step instructions for this time frame will be provided to you after your treatment.
- Continue to do cool towel compress as needed.
- Continue to avoid all forms of heat and sun exposure.
Days 2–7

- Expect peeling or flaking of the skin for 3–7 days; do not pick, scratch, or pull at peeling skin to prevent scarring or hyperpigmentation. Clean scissors may be used to snip off large pieces of flaking skin where necessary.
- Remember that the depth of the peel depends on the massage time during treatment—longer or more vigorous massage may result in a deeper peel.
After Full Peeling (7–10 days)
- Once peeling is complete, you will be booked in for a rehydration follow-up session at the clinic.
- This is the time when you may resume skin hydration, normal makeup and your normal skincare routine.

- If the treatment is performed during the day, after 90 minutes only moisturiser and SPF50+ may be applied. Ideally however, nothing is to be applied.
- The primary instruction for the first 6-8 hours after treatment is to leave the treated area undisturbed to allow the applied serums to absorb and the micro-channels to close.
- Avoid spicy foods and try to minimize exposure to pet dander or other irritants, as you may experience a mild allergic reaction within the first 24 hours even to things you normally don’t react to.
- Avoid direct sun exposure; use protective clothing and hats where possible.
- Continue to avoid the heat inducing exercises/activities listed earlier, sweating and heat exposure even from cooking, opening hot ovens and extremely hot showers etc.
- If uncomfortable puffiness, swelling and itchiness occurs, antihistamines may be taken as recommended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider.

PRE-CARE INSTRUCTIONS
1 -2 Weeks Before Treatment
- Medications & Supplements: Avoid blood-thinning supplements and medications if medically safe, including NSAID's (aspirin, ibuprofen), paracetamol, ginkgo biloba, fish oil, krill oil, and high-dose Vitamin E to reduce the risk of excessive bruising, bleeding and swelling at the injection site. Always check with your doctor before stopping prescribed medications. If in doubt, reach out and inform the clinic of any medications/supplements you take to confirm.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to treatment to reduce bruising.
- Skin Treatments: Avoid facial treatments, waxing, chemical peels, or other exfoliating procedures on the treatment area for 2 weeks prior.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment to keep skin and body well-hydrated.
- Health Considerations: Inform your injector if you have had recent illness, cold sores, infections, allergies, or other medical conditions. Active inflammation or infection at the injection site may require rescheduling.
- Event Planning: Schedule treatments at least 2 weeks before major social events or travel. Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers usually show optimal results after 2+ weeks.
- Arnica: Begin taking these tablets as recommended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider a a few days before (2-3 days is common, 1 week if you bruise easily) to help minimise swelling and bruising.
- Cold Sores (Herpes Simplex Virus): If you are prone to cold sores, antiviral medication may be taken as recommended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider (some protocols begin 3 days prior).
- Dental Work: A minimum wait of 2 weeks is required after any dental procedures (including cleans, fillings, or dental surgery) before undergoing cosmetic injectable treatments, to reduce the risk of infection and inflammation.
Day of Treatment
- Eat a Light Meal: Reduces the risk of feeling light-headed during or after treatment.
- Arrive Makeup-Free: Have a clean face to prevent bacteria and allow for proper assessment.
- Limit Caffeine: Avoid caffeine right before, as it can increase blood pressure and bruising.
- Bruising Minimisation: If you bruise easily, consider scheduling appointments outside of your menstrual cycle.
- Rest & Relaxation: Aim for a good night’s sleep and avoid stress to help your body be in the best condition for treatment.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose clothing if injections are near the neck or décolletage to avoid irritation.
What to Expect After Treatment
- Mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or warmth at injection sites is common and usually settles within a few hours to a few days.
- Small bumps, firmness, or unevenness may be felt temporarily as the product settles.
- Mild bruising or small marks can occur and typically fade within a few days to a week.
- A feeling of tightness, heaviness, or mild pressure in treated areas may be noticed initially.
- Mild headache or pressure can occur after anti-wrinkle injections and usually resolves within 24–72 hours.
- Results from anti-wrinkle injections gradually appear within 3–14 days.
- Dermal filler results are visible immediately, with final results once swelling subsides (up to 2 weeks).
- Most clients can return to normal daily activities straight away, following aftercare guidelines.
Risks and Possible Side Effects
- Adverse Reactions: Rare but serious complications may occur. Immediate medical review is required if symptoms such as progressive pain, increasing swelling, blanching, mottling or discoloration of the skin (white, blue, purple, grey, or erythematous), or signs of infection (erythema, warmth, discharge, fever) are observed, as these may indicate vascular occlusion or infection. You should contact the clinic as soon as possible for prompt intervention.
POST-CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Immediate After Treatment (0–24 hours):
- Makeup: Avoid makeup for at least 1 hour. Mineral makeup may be applied on the day if needed; otherwise, wait until the second day. Always use clean brushes or sponges.
- Pressure & Touching: Do not rub, massage, or apply pressure to the treated area. Avoid lying face down or applying deep pressure for 2 weeks.
- Exercise: Avoid vigorous activities, including exercise, for 24–48 hours to prevent increased blood flow and heat from metabolising the product too quickly, which could reduce effectiveness. This also helps minimise bruising and swelling.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours to minimise swelling and bruising.
- Swelling/Allergy Management: Take an antihistamine (e.g., Claratyne, Telfast) if swelling or mild reaction occurs. Repeat in the following days if needed as reccomended by your pharmacist or healthcare provider.
First Few Days (1–7 days):
- Sun & Heat Exposure: Avoid prolonged sun exposure, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, or other heat-inducing activities. Apply SPF 50+ daily.

Additional Tips:
- Sleeping Position: Sleep on your back with your head elevated if possible.

PRE - CARE INSTRUCTIONS
2 Weeks Before Treatment
- Prescription Skincare: Stop all prescription retinoids (Vitamin A), hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, and high-strength or prescription products.
- Aesthetic/Medical Treatments: Avoid facials, skin needling, laser treatments, laser hair removal (face or treatment area), and all cosmetic injectables.
- Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, threading, dermaplaning, electrolysis, or brow lamination on the treatment area as they can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier and cause micro-irritation.
- Sun & Heat Exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure (sun-burn), wind exposure (wind-burn), tanning beds etc. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing.
1 Week Before Treatment
What to Expect During Treatment
- Tingling or Prickling: A gentle pins-and-needles feeling may appear, especially on sensitive areas like the cheeks or around the nose.
- Slight Warmth: A subtle warming of the skin is common and expected.
What to Expect After Treatment
- Flaking and Dryness: Usually starts 3–4 days after treatment as the skin exfoliates from the inside out.
- Tightness: Skin may feel firm or slightly stretched as it begins to exfoliate.
- Peeling: Visible peeling may occur as old skin cells shed, revealing smoother, fresher skin underneath.
- Mild Redness or Sensitivity: Your skin may feel more sensitive to touch, heat, or sunlight.
- Timing: Most peeling and dryness last about 3–7 days, depending on your skin type, sensitivity and the intensity of the treatment - more layers of application = more exfoliation and prolonged peeling.
Step by Step Aftercare
Day 0–1 (Immediately After Treatment)
- Do not cleanse your face for the first 12 hours.
- Avoid water directly on the face—no hot showers, jacuzzis, steam rooms, or saunas.
- Do not touch, pick, scratch, rub the skin or cause friction to prevent bacteria spreading, scabbing, scarring, hyperpigmentation and irritation.
- Make sure to change your pillowcase, wipe down your phone, and keep your environment clean to reduce the risk of bacteria and support proper healing.
Day 2-3
- Mild tingling, redness, or sensitivity is normal.
- A cool towel compress can be applied to the treated area at home to help reduce heat, redness, and sensitivity. Repeat several times as needed, using a fresh cool towel each time to maintain a soothing effect.
- Skin may start flaking or peeling—this is expected.
- Gentle cleansing is allowed with a mild, non-stripping cleanser. Pat dry, do not rub.
- Apply a gentle moisturiser and SPF 50+.
- Apply and reapply SPF as needed.
- An aftercare card with detailed, step-by-step instructions for this time frame will be provided to you after your treatment.
- Continue to avoid all forms of heat and sun exposure. Gentle and low intensity activities such as walking or pilates is usually fine 48 hours after.
Day 4-7
- Peeling and dryness may continue; it should gradually subside toward the end of the week.
- Continue gentle cleansing and daily moisturizing.
- Do not pick at flaking skin.
- Stick to mild, soothing products until the skin barrier is fully restored.
- Healing times vary depending on your skin type; some may peel more or less than others.
- Once peeling is complete, you will be booked in for a rehydration follow-up session at the clinic.
- This is the time when you may resume your normal skincare routine.
- Final results develop gradually as peeling completes and skin regenerates.
- Skincare & Actives Restriction: Avoid all active and exfoliating products (acids, vitamin C, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, scrubs, peels, masks, and exfoliating pads). for at least 1 week after treatment or until fully healed. Resume weekly exfoliation products after 2 weeks from treatment. Avoid ANY prescription skincare, retinoids (Vitamin A products), hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, or any other high-strength topical products for 2 weeks post-treatment or until fully healed.
- Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, threading, dermaplaning, electrolysis or brow lamination on the treatment area for at least 2 weeks after treatment or until fully healed.
- Aesthetic & Medical Treatments: Avoid facials, skin needling, laser treatments, laser hair removal (face or treated area), chemical peels, and cosmetic injectables (Botox, dermal fillers, skin boosters) for 2–4 weeks post-treatment or until fully healed, depending on the procedure.
If you have any concerns, unexpected reactions, or anything simply doesn’t feel right, please contact your therapist promptly. We are here to support you every step of the way.
