FAQ
Alma Dye SR and Dye-VL IPL are Advanced Fluence Technology (AFT) - enhanced intense pulsed light (IPL) systems designed to target pigmented and vascular lesions while simultaneously promoting skin rejuvenation. They use a broad spectrum of light selectively absorbed by hemoglobin and melanin, enabling safe, non-invasive treatment of sun damage, redness, broken capillaries, rosacea, pigmented lesions, and overall skin tone irregularities.
Dye-VL IPL integrates dynamic pulse technology to deliver precise, customizable light energy, while Dye SR focuses on vascular-targeted therapy with a longer wavelength for deeper vessel penetration. Both systems provide non-ablative, fractional-like effects, stimulating collagen remodeling and improving skin texture with minimal downtime whilst preserving epidermal integrity.
1. Selective Photothermolysis
The principle of selective photothermolysis allows IPL light to target specific chromophores with high precision:
- Hemoglobin (vascular lesions): Hemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin strongly absorb light within the IPL spectrum, converting the energy into localized thermal energy. This thermally denatures the vessel wall proteins, causing coagulation and controlled collapse of superficial capillaries. The damaged vessels are then gradually resorbed and cleared by the body’s lymphatic and immune systems, reducing visible redness and vascular imperfections without affecting surrounding tissue.
- Melanin (pigmented lesions): Melanin absorbs IPL light and converts it into heat and photomechanical energy, which disrupts the melanin granules within melanocytes or keratinocytes. Superficial pigment is raised to the surface as tiny micro-crusts that naturally slough off, while deeper pigment is shattered and fragmented and gradually cleared via the lymphatic system. This dual mechanism allows precise treatment of both surface and dermal pigmentation, progressively evening skin tone. This process not only reduces hyperpigmentation but also promotes epidermal turnover and reveals a more uniform, brighter skin tone.
What is Advanced Fluence Technology (AFT)?
AFT is Alma’s proprietary system that stabilizes and maintains fluence throughout each pulse, delivering uniform, controlled energy across the treatment area. By reducing peak energy spikes and preventing overheating, AFT ensures precision, safety, and comfort, making it suitable for sensitive areas and higher Fitzpatrick skin types, while optimizing chromophore targeting and penetration depth.
2. Dermal Rejuvenation & Collagen Stimulation
The absorbed light energy also produces a controlled thermal effect in the dermis, which:
- Activates fibroblasts to synthesize new collagen (types I & III) and elastin
- Improves skin elasticity, firmness, and dermal density
- Enhances microcirculation and oxygenation, supporting cellular metabolism and renewal
- Stimulates extracellular matrix remodeling, improving texture and reducing fine lines
Alma’s proprietary In-Motion technology delivers the light in a continuous sweeping motion, ensuring:
- Even energy distribution and surface protection
- Minimal discomfort
- Safe treatment of larger areas with maximal efficacy
Additionally, the integrated cooled tip protect the epidermis while allowing precise dermal targeting.
Dye SR (550–650 nm)
- Wavelength & Depth: Longer wavelength penetrates deeper into the dermis, ideal for vascular lesions, deeper pigmentation, and mixed chromophore conditions.
- AFT Function: Uses AFT to stabilize fluence for deeper, more even dermal penetration, reducing the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
- Technology: Works with In-Motion™ for smooth, consistent passes and controlled energy delivery.
- Skin Types: Suitable for all Fitzpatrick types, including darker tones (IV–V).
Dye VL (500–600 nm)
- Wavelength & Depth: Shorter wavelength targets superficial pigment and fine vascular lesions, working closer to the epidermis.
- AFT Function: Uses AFT to maintain consistent, shallow-targeting energy, ideal for delicate superficial structures.
- Technology: Integrates Dynamic Pulse Control (DPC) to optimize pulse structure based on chromophore depth and type, and In-Motion™ for even coverage and comfort.
- Skin Types: Designed for Fitzpatrick I–III only, due to higher melanin absorption at shorter wavelengths.
Summary:
- Dye SR: deeper penetration, vascular + pigment correction, safe for all skin types including darker Fitzpatrick tones.
- Dye VL: superficial targeting, Fitzpatrick I–III only, ideal for light pigment and mild vascular concerns.
- Both: AFT stabilizes and maintains fluence, In-Motion™ ensures smooth energy delivery, and non-ablative dermal stimulation promotes collagen remodeling, improving tone, texture, and clarity.
Dye SR and Dye-VL IPL are ideal for clients seeking improvement in:
- Sunspots, age spots, and freckles
- Rosacea and facial redness
- Spider veins, broken capillaries, and port-wine stains
- Uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, and post-inflammatory pigmentation
- Mild laxity, fine lines, and early signs of ageing
- Overall skin rejuvenation
Most clients find IPL very tolerable. Sensations may include:
- Stationary method: Mild snapping, stinging, or warmth similar to a rubber band; may last up to 48 hours.
- In-Motion method: Feels like a warm, gliding massage due to continuous movement and cooling tip.
- Sessions typically last 20–40 minutes, depending on area treated.
Ultrasound gel is applied on the skin in both methods as the conduction medium.
Numbing cream can be applied to minimise discomfort if needed.
- Slight redness or warmth for 24–72 hours
- Mild sensitivity or tingling
- Light swelling (more common in vascular treatments)
- Dryness or tightness in the treated area for 1–3 days
- Micro-crusting in pigmented spots, which naturally slough off within 3–7 days
- Instant skin glow from improved microcirculation and cellular stimulation
- Rare petechiae (tiny red or purple spots caused by minor capillary rupture), which resolve within a few days
- In acne-prone clients, heat may occasionally bring underlying breakouts or clogged pores to the surface, which typically settle quickly
Individual responses vary, but effects are temporary and usually resolve quickly. A more comprehensive Pre and Post Care Document is provided following treatment.
Because the epidermis is preserved, both Dye SR and Dye-VL are minimally invasive with minimal to no downtime.
- Normal activities can be resumed immediately
- Makeup is usually fine the next day
For optimal results:
- Avoid heat, saunas, and heavy exercise for the first 24 hours
- Minimise direct sun exposure for the duration of your treatment program to prevent pigmentation changes and unwanted inflammation.
- Use gentle, hydrating skincare for 5 days
- Avoid retinoids, acids, vitamin C for 5 days
- Apply SPF 50 daily
- Avoid picking or squeezing breakouts
- Stay hydrated to support collagen production
- Superficial pigmented lesions: 3–6 sessions at 2–3-week intervals
- Superficial vascular lesions: 3–6 sessions at 2–3-week intervals
24–72 Hours: Mild redness, warmth, or tingling; early dermal response begins.
1 Week: Pigmented areas may form micro-crusts that gradually flake off; vascular lesions may darken slightly before fading.
2–4 Weeks: Noticeable improvement in tone, texture, and reduction in redness or pigmentation.
6–12 Weeks: Collagen remodeling and dermal rejuvenation continue; firmness, elasticity, and evenness of tone improve.
Note: Results are progressive and cumulative; one session of IPL will yield visible results at 2 weeks for the full effect, however will not achieve full skin transformation. Lifestyle, genetics, the severity of the indications being treated, adherence to minimising sun exposure, age, skincare, and session number all influence outcomes. Clients receive personalised recommendations to support skin health, immunity and to maximise antioxidant intake.
